Summary
What are we doing?
We are migrating services and servers from our on-premises datacentre, “DC1,” to the Azure cloud. This migration involves transferring our applications, databases, and other infrastructure from the physical datacentre to virtual resources in the cloud. It includes assessing reconfiguring systems for the Azure environment, and securely moving data and applications to Azure while ensuring minimal downtime.
Why are we doing it?
The migration to Azure offers several advantages over maintaining an on-premises datacentre. Azure provides enhanced scalability, enabling our infrastructure to grow with our business demands without physical limitations. Cloud-based services offer greater reliability, faster disaster recovery, and improved security features to protect data and applications. Moving to Azure also reduces the cost of maintaining physical hardware, cooling, and power requirements in our datacentre, allowing us to focus more resources on innovation and core business objectives. Ultimately, the migration aligns with our long-term strategy to modernise our IT infrastructure and increase operational efficiency.
When are we doing this (Affected Services)?
The list of Services being migrated along with the dates and times can be found here – https://www.qmul.ac.uk/its/projectsandchange/journey-to-cloud/schedule/
Impact to Users
During each migration there will be a loss of service for approx. 30 mins whilst the service is switched over from DC1 to Azure
