Summary
Microsoft will soon be retiring Basic authentication, meaning that only Modern authentication methods will be compatible. Basic authentication is less secure method used by older client applications. Blocking Basic authentication protects organisation and users from brute force or password spray attacks. QMUL staff and students must ensure that they are using secure and up-to-date email clients before 31/08/22 11am. After this date, only mail clients that support Modern authentication can access QMUL email.
Recommended email clients that support Modern authentication:
· Outlook 2016 for Windows or later
· Outlook 2016 for Mac or later
· Outlook for iOS and Android (iOS and Android)
· Mail for iOS 11.3.1 or later
These mail clients are the most secure and compatible with Modern authentication, and as a result, allow us to keep your data and the data of others safe.
If you are using other methods to receive university email on your device, you should remove these and we recommend installing and using the above-mentioned applications.
The latest version of Microsoft Office (includes Outlook client) is available for free to download and install for QMUL students and staff. This software can be installed on up to 5 personal devices. Sign-in to the portal with your QM credentials at: https://portal.office.com/account/?ref=MeControl
Outlook clients in QMUL managed laptops and desktops support Modern authentication and do not need upgrading or any other actions from you. Accessing email via ‘Outlook on the web’ https://mail.qmul.ac.uk is not affected. End-users can always access their QMUL email via webmail.
Mozilla thunderbird users: Authentication method for Incoming and Outgoing Server must be set to OAuth2 before 31/08/22. You must use Thunderbird 77.0b1 or later, as they support OAuth2 Modern authentication
